More on Duplication

There are a number of programs that will duplicate a disc image and then burn the image all in one process, so that the user often doesn’t distinguish that there is actually two things occurring. First the image is produced, and second this image is then burnt to the disc. Knowing this difference is essential as it can save you money. The making of the disc image is a costly and time intensive process. Often the disc-writing program will remove this image from the “temporary directory” where it was prepared. The user can instruct the disc burning software to save the image. In this way the image can then be used for creating more copies of the image without the time intensive procedure of reconstructing the image again.

Packet-writing is an application that allows writing parts of the file rather than one big image, allowing the disc to be used like a floppy rewritable disc. A common burning software program is the Ahead Nero burning software. Not only does it burn an image and allow packet-writing, but it also allows verification of the burnt image. This ensures better data integrity. Burn speeds can also be set, depending upon the media used. Some discs will only allow certain write speeds, and so you can only select from these various speeds. Lower write speeds mean the burn process takes longer, however the margin for error is reduced.
